Sam C. S., in his turn as a composer for Vikram Vedha, attempted something of a tight-rope balancing act, blending racy, noir'ish instrumentals with soft romantic ballads. It didn't fully work (when taken as a whole, that is), but that hasn't stopped him from giving it a shot again. Iravukku Aayiram Kangal, taken in that sense, is cut from the same cloth as Vikram Vedha - equal parts an ode to love and a tension building exercise. Only this time too, Sam's flair for atmosphere (Nights of Neverland, Winds of the Darkest Hour) easily scores over the rest, which, frankly sound dissonant and out of place, as if they had no business being here. Yet I did enjoy Yean Penne Neeyum, a pretty semi-classical piece marked by a profusion of strings and a fantastic singing by Haricharan Seshadri.
