Let me get it right out of the way. I absolutely loved the choice of instruments employed by Bindhumalini and Vedanth Bharadhwaj in Aruvi. Not to forget the unconventional tunes, that are not only a cappella'esque (Kukkotti Kunaatti in particular recalls Prashant Pillai's Aathmavil) and pared down to the bare essentials, a refreshing diversion from the overt, in-your-face music that has come to define Indian film music today, they offer one of the rarest opportunities to concentrate solely on the singers' voices. And sadly this is where Aruvi comes undone, for I found the singing (almost all of them sung by Bindhumalini) to be its weakest link. At times distracting even, as if they were best served as instrumentals. Don't get me wrong, Aruvi is fantastic, but flawless it is not.
