When A. R. Rahman was roped in for Mersal, I sort of didn't know what to expect. But given how Azhagiya Tamil Magan turned out, I was hoping for something along those lines — a trendy mishmash of Tamil folk and western music. But after having listened to the much-hyped soundtrack, I am like "Is that it?" Because Mersal is anything but mersalAalaporaan Thamizhan is punchy, I will give it that — the rest is a cluttered mess and a hodgepodge of disparate sounds that are not only lacklustre, but also ennui-inducing and all over the place, sounding as if they are rough versions that were cut short before they could be polished and refined further. Mersal has an interesting beat here and a groovy riff there, but for the most part, the attempt comes off as listless and perfunctory. At least it's mercifully short. Shockingly mediocre outing from Rahman!
