Music Review: Vikram Vedha (Tamil)

Composer(s): Sam C. S.

Sam appears to be channelling Mahishasura Mardini Stotram in Karuppu Vellai, but with a grunge rock makeover that's adequately gripping. The folky melodies Yaanji Yaanji and Pogatha Yennavittu, while Ilaiyaraaja'esque and making splendid use of strings, sound a little out of place, even as the drunken revelry that marks Tasakku Tasakku's manic kuthu is just about so-so. Where Sam really hits out of the park is in the remaining six instrumentals (Ghetto Chase, Idhu Emosion, Yethu Nyayam? and Oru Katha Sollatta? in particular), delivering a racy noir'ish mix of intriguing beats and sounds. Sam C. S. does to Vikram Vedha what Santhosh Narayanan did to Jigarthanda, albeit with mixed results.
