Music Review: Udta Punjab (Hindi)

Composer(s): Amit Trivedi

The electronic sounds in Chitta Ve and the Amit Trivedi'ish (!) Vadiya make them just about appealing enough, and Da Da Dasse, despite Kanika Kapoor's commendable vocal effort, feels oddly banal. Ikk Kudi, in Shahid Mallya's soulful rendition, channels the requisite pathos very well aided by a simple guitary arrangement, while its other reprise version opts for a more conventional rock-laden soundscape that fails to elicit the same level of emotion that made the former so effective. Shahid Mallya comes back a second time to lead the lovely if typically ambient qawwali Hass Nache Le, led even better by a profusion of dhols and harmonium, courtesy Raju Sardar and Akhlak Hussain Varsi. Where Amit loses in Chitta Ve and Vadiya, he makes up for it in the catchy Angreji Beat-like techno folk Ud-daa Punjab, embellishing the song with a funky fusion of sorts that gets its energetic accompaniment in Vishal Dadlani and the composer himself. Udta Punjab doesn't soar, and is mostly unremarkable.
