Heavy Rotation: Deva, S. A. Rajkumar, Shravan & More

I am back in full nostalgia mode, thanks to Shaan Rahman who brought back Unni Menon in Jacobinte Swargarajyam!

Aaru Paranju (Berny-Ignatius, Pulival Kalyanam) - P. Jayachandran's voice is like nectar to the ears, and when Chithra joins the mix, the result can only be summed up as magic!

Aavanipponnoonjal Aadikkam (Kottaram Veetile Apputtan), Oru Kathilola (Vettam), Thamarapoovil (Chandralekha), Mayilaay Parannuvaa (Mayilpeelikkavu) (Berny-Ignatius) - Splendorous semi-classical melodies, flawlessly rendered by M. G. Sreekumar and Sujatha.

Edho Oru Paattu (Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen), Kadhal Vennila (Vaanathaippola), Thoda Thodu Enavae Vanavil (Thulladha Manamum Thullum) (S. A. Rajkumar) - Hariharan, phew!

Innisai Paadivarum (Thulladha Manamum Thullum), Anantham Anantham (Poove Unakkaga), Kaatrukku Thudivittu (Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen), Pallangkuzhiyin (Aanandham) (S. A. Rajkumar) - Where Unnikrishnan and Harini nail the sweet melodies with their stellar vocals.

Kaadhal Enna Kannamoochi (S. A. Rajkumar, Aval Varuvala) - S.P.B. complements this soft lilting melody like only he can.

Kumbakonam Santhayile (Simmarasi), Manasa Madichi (Kannupada Poguthaiya) (S. A. Rajkumar) - Absurdly hooky folk dance numbers, foot-tapping and repeat-worthy in Arun Mozhi, Sujatha, S.P.B. and Chithra's phenomenal rendition.

Kannoramai Kathai (Kannupada Poguthaiya), Kavvinchake O Prema (Raja) (S. A. Rajkumar) - I am unsure as to what's the better version. If S.P.B. and Chithra rock Kannoramai..., Rajesh Krishnan and Sujatha bring their A-game to Kavvinchake...

Pillo O Pillo (Beat Mix) (Shravan, Savitri) - Shravan's Savitri is an aural treat for percussion lovers, but what I didn't expect was Pillo O Pillo getting an addictive synthy, beat-driven remix that brings to mind Sinhalese artist Ranidu Lankage's Ahankara Nagare.

Alupe Marachi, O Prema (Okkosari), Tulle Tulle, Gundu Soodhi (Prema Ishq Kaadhal), Adugu Dooke (Meeku Meere Maaku Meeme) - Shravan weaves his magic with a string of euphonious melodies that make for an ever-morphing mix of textures and beats.

Enna Vilaiyazhagae, Daandiyaa Aattamumaada (Kadhalar Dhinam), Mainave Mainave (Vaanathaippola), Ennai Thalattum (Unnai Ninaithu) - While Rhythm's Nadhiye Nadhiye remains my all-time favourite Unni Menon song, these compositions from A. R. Rahman, S. A. Rajkumar and Sirpy are no slouches either.

Boochade Boochade, Cinema Choopista Mava (S. Thaman, Race Gurram) - Is it really Shreya Ghoshal in Boochade? I'm having a hard time believing it. She aces the racy Edward Maya-like pulsating techno rocker, and Thaman, for his part, does damn well too!

Kalangal (S. Thaman, Thadaiyara Thaakka) - A very soulful melody, with pretty arrangements and superb singing by Javed Ali and Chinmayi.

Mazhaiye Mazhaiye, Saaral En, Tharai Erangiya (S. Thaman, Eeram) - One word to describe this Thaman soundtrack: Gorgeous.

Bale Bale Magadivoy (Mickey J. Meyer, Maro Charitra) - Shweta Pandit's whispery voice adds to the charm in Mickey Meyer's infectious take on the late M. S. Viswanathan's original tune.

Ninnindale (Mano Murthy, Milana) - Beautifully tuned and mellifluous, Sonu Nigam takes the romantic ballad to a whole new level.

Manam Virumbuthey (Nerrukku Ner), Pulveli Pulveli, Meenamma Athikalayilum (Aasai) (Deva) - Deva is perhaps best known for popularising the gaana genre in Tamil, but one listen to these fantastic melodies would make you think otherwise!

Kadhala Kadhala (Avvai Shanmughi), Semmeena Vinmeena (Anantha Poongatre), Nagumo (Arunachalam), Hey Keechu Kiliye (Mugavaree), Vannanilavae Vannanilavae (Ninaithen Vandhai) (Deva) - Hariharan again, but this time with Deva, and I love every single one of them. But it bears noting at this point that Hey Keechu... is a straight rip-off of Dr. Alban's Enemies from his 1997 album I Believe, right down to the beat.

En Maaman (Deva, Iraniyan) - Definitely a riff off Rahman's Kuchi Kuchi, but the lovely folk tune hits the sweet spot with Swarnalatha's excellent rendition.

Viral Thottal Viriyunna (Deva, Phantom) - One of the few Malayalam compositions from Deva, but a very memorable one at that. His decision to rope in Jayachandran and Chithra to handle the melody pays off so wonderfully.

Kaadhal Kaadhal Kaadhal (Poochudava), Ennai Thalattum, Yaar Indha Devathai (Unnai Ninaithu), Aalps Malaikkaattru (Thedinen Vanthathu), Laila Laila (Nandhini), Meena Ponnu (Nattamai), Ragasiyamanathu (Kodambakkam), Chevanthi Poo (Gokulam) (Sirpy) - Where P. Susheela, S.P.B., Chithra, Hariharan, Mano, Sujatha, Harish Raghavendra and Harini take the romantic melodies to unreachable heights with their unmatched singing!

Malare Oru Varthai (Shiva Shankar, Poomagal Oorvalam), Nee Malaraa Malaraa (Arputham), Yen Pennendru (Love Today), Sollathan Ninaikiren (Kadhal Sugamanathu) - Euphonious melodies, beautifully backed by Hariharan, Sujatha, Unnikrishnan, Chithra and Mohammed Aslam.

Thuli Thuliyaai Kottum Mazhai, Thirudiya Idhayathai Thiruppi, Thirumba Thirumba, Yeh Asaindhaadum (Bharani, Paarvai Ondre Podhume) - Bharani had a short-lived stint as a composer in the early 2000s, but no one can forget the musical sensation that was Paarvai Ondre Podhume. Packing in soothing melodies and captivating harmonies, the soundtrack is impeccably produced and catchy as the clap.
