This is What You Came For (Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna) - As far as collaborations go, singer Rihanna has had a solid track record when it comes to churning out hit after hit with artists from diverse genres, yet this single, meta-titled This is What You Came For, like as if prefiguring the reasons as to why the listener might give it a shot, isn't even half as interesting as their previous collab We Found Love was, panning out at best as a passable, if catchy, summer anthem that's about as pedestrian as it can get.
Summers Over Interlude, Feel No Ways, Too Good ft. Rihanna (Drake) - Drake is not an artist I seek out per se, and while I have never professed to be a great fan of the kind of music he purveys, I did end up loving Find Your Love, Take Care, Hold On, We're Going Home and Hotline Bling. Views sees the Canadian rapper continuing the trend of downbeat, muted jams with Summers Over Interlude and Feel No Ways (its Hold On... vibe is unmissable, all thanks to electronic duo Majid-Jordan), at the same time embracing Afro-sounds in One Dance and the infectious Caribbean-tinged relationship duet with Rihanna titled Too Good, a dance-heavy companion piece to Work. The rest, meh!
Compass Point (Holy Ghost!) - Those rumbling synths make the glittering deep-disco song such a standout!
Never Get You Out of My Mind (Leif Erikson) - After looking for signs in their Fleet Foxes-like debut single, London-based quintet Leif Erikson make you go Never Get You Out of My Mind with their latest harmonic ditty.
Colours (Roosevelt) - "When you left you took all colours with you," laments Roosevelt about a lover who has deserted him, amidst an arrangement sparkling with life, gliding along a groovy bedrock of addictive, dance-inducing bongos and synths. Colour, like his previous outings Montreal and Around You, is a lush and flashy neo-disco jam with a slick bassline and a smooth lead vocal.
Below (White Lung) - After vowing back-to-back with aggressive and ferocious singles Hungry and Kiss Me When I Bleed, Vancouver-based punk rock band White Lung try a different tack, opting for a relatively subdued approach with their melodic new offering Below from their to-be-released album Paradise. And needless to say, the result remains as enchanting as ever.
Barricade (Matter of Fact), Keep it Close to Me (Yumi Zouma) - Dreamy and shimmeringly synthy, the ethereal songs from pop quartet Yumi Zouma is your ultimate music fix for a hazy, disorienting listen. The songs are delicate on so many levels!
