Music Review: Mellisai aka Puriyaatha Puthir (Tamil)

Hariharan and Harini join hands together yet again for a fabulous melody Vellai Kanavu (lovely veena by the way!), while in Lola, which appears in two different versions sung effectively by Maria Kavitha Thomas and Andrea Jeremiah, the composer opts for an array of intriguing sounds that continue to make their presence felt in the engrossing theme song (now titled Puriyaatha Puthir) as well. Nilavai aka Parakkiren Naan (and its English counterpart Take Me Higher) is a mish-mash of musically divergent styles (Latino and Hindustani), yet it all blends together beautifully (it also reminded me of Paramathma's Paravashanadenu at places). Mazhaikkulle, with its arresting strings, warrants a listen just for its top-notch orchestration, and Shreya Ghoshal and Haricharan lend their voices as is expected out of them. Mellisai's music stays true to its title!

Update on Jan. 2, 2017: Most of the new additions are gripping and strings-heavy instrumentals, while Theera Vali and Happy Birthday Meera are contrastingly plaintive and upbeat, at the same time carrying forward the soundtrack's melodic undercurrent.
