Music Review: Vanakkam Chennai (Tamil)

Notwithstanding its faint similarities to Boomi Enna Suthudhe, Hey! is an absolute delight to hear, the mix of saxophone, guitar and Celtic elements being the highlight. A. R. Rahman's flourishes are clearly evident in the mesmerizing rustic melody Osaka Osaka, and Pragathi Guruprasad, despite a late entry, ably assists the composer in the singing department. Its other variant Ailasa Ailasa, impeccably sung by Suchitra, gets a minimalist treatment incorporating guitars, piano and shehnai. Vishal Dadlani makes a smashing Tamil debut with the immensely likeable Oh Penne that otherwise suffers from a predominant Kanave Kanave hangover. An International version of the same track gets a pronounced hip-hop makeover and is quite an engaging listen, thanks to perky vocals from Arjun Coomaraswamy and Charles Bosco. If Ethir Neechal pitted Yo Yo Honey Singh against Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi, it's now the turn of Hard Kaur in Chennai City Gangsta, with both the singers rapping their way to glory. Engadi Porandha works for its playful lyrics and beatboxing, but otherwise passes muster. Vanakkam Chennai is catchy, if familiar, music from Anirudh.
