Book Review: One, Two, Buckle My Shoe

Agatha Christie resorts yet again to a nursery rhyme theme and the results are as devilishly clever (if a little far-fetched) as you would expect. After all how can it not when Hercule Poirot is at the top of his game? But One, Two, Buckle My Shoe is also a touch political, reflecting on the state of the country post World War II even as Christie peppers the narrative with characters who espouse different partisan leanings and harbour secret intentions to overthrow the conservative-led government. Thus what opens as a fairly straightforward murder investigation of Poirot's dentist becomes much more than what it appears and it will take the Belgian's little grey cells to solve the exceedingly complicated yet unpredictable mystery. So much so that his incredulous theories lead Inspector Japp to joke thus at one point - "You're talking like a thriller by a lady novelist." Now we know who that lady is, don't we?
