Music Review: Padaiveeran (Tamil)

The manic album opener Kombathi Komban sets the tone for what's to follow. An engaging mix of a variety of folk sounds, the song features singer Mukesh who hits all the right notes with his enthusiastic singing. Mattikkiten is almost a near-perfect Ilaiyaraaja throwback, led by first-rate vocals from Haricharan and Rita. Vijay Yesudas (who is also the lead actor in this film) aces both the songs he appears in (Hkkumttada and Inaiye Inaiye, is the female humming in the latter by Bhavatharani?), while Chinmayi imparts a new lease of life to the lush melody Ithuvarai Naan that Yuvan mangles as usual in his version. Theera Nadhi and Left Right, in contrast, appear to be more situational, offering little by way of repeat value. In what's long due, Karthik Raja goes full-on rustic with Padaiveeran.
