Music Review: S3 (Tamil)

It's clear S3 (read Singam 3) is intended to be a commercial vehicle, and its music, set to tune by Harris Jayaraj, reflects that. In typical Harris Jayaraj style. Yet one wonders for how long he plans to keep regurgitating his limited repertoire of sounds that originally propelled him to fame. It's been 15 years after all. There are a few attempts at heavy rock (the James Bond'ish Universal Cop, Mission to Sydney, S3 Vetta) and a few more spent rehashing his own stock melodies (Mudhal Varai, Wi Wi Wi Wi Wifi), both of which fall flat. The jazzy He's My Hero, on the other hand, is undone by its amateurish tune. Where S3 springs to life is in the superb album opener O Sone Sone. It's almost an 'energy tonic' of sorts, thanks to Javed Ali! And pitiably and predictably it's all downhill from there.
