Heavy Rotation: A. R. Rahman, Niladri Kumar, Rahul Raj & More

Some of my favourite listens in Indian music from the last few weeks...

Rasaali (A. R. Rahman, Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada) - A. R. Rahman and Shashaa Tirupati are fast turning out to be one combo to watch out for. First Zariya, then Aye Mr. Minor, Paranthu Sella Vaa, Naane Varugiraen, Kaara Aattaakkaara, Punnagaye, and now Rasaali, Rahman sure knows how to put her fantastic vocals to the best use!

Nee Nadhiyaagi (B. Ajaneesh Loknath, Sipaayi) - Ajaneesh continues to channel Ilaiyaraaja in this lovely stringy melody, recalling to mind the maestro's Thumbi Vaa (Olangal).

Yad Lagla, Sairat Zaala Ji (Ajay-Atul, Sairat) - Are these from composer brother duo Ajay and Atul Gogavale, or Ilaiyaraaja? I am mighty confused, but no doubt with regards to their mind-blowing orchestration though, especially the former's enticing Western classical fusion. The latter's folk base, while a little evocative of Ajaneesh's Gatiya Ilidu, is backed mighty well by Ajay and Chinmayi on the vocals.

Summane (Manikanth Kadri, Run Antony) - Manikanth Kadri's superbly melodic tune gets its fitting accompaniment in Javed Ali, who is in his usual brilliant form.

Aaha Identha (Niladri Kumar, Niruttara) - I have been effusive enough about Niladri Kumar's sublime and transportive musical piece Aaha Identha, but I just can't stop raving about it. It's that marvellous, and it's that impossible to not deny its brilliance.

Medapoompattum Chutti (Rahul Raj, Karinkunnam 6s) - Rahul Raj is fast getting as dependable as composer Vidyasagar when it comes to melodies, and this delightful song sung by Najim Arshad is no exception.

Maya Nadhi, Vaanam Paarthen (Santhosh Narayanan, Kabali) - The vintage Ilaiyaraaja aesthetic is hard to miss, but the mellow compositions are mighty exceptional in their own right, bolstered by Santhosh's excellent musical score and Pradeep Kumar's sheer vocal firepower.
