Heavy Rotation: Ilaiyaraaja (Part II)

I am still stuck in nostalgic mode, mostly revisiting Ilaiyaraaja's music from the 90's...

Aalappol Velappol, Nilave Mugam, Oru Naalum, Adi Raakumuthu (Ejamaan) - Evergreen knock-out melodies from the maestro that only grow on you with every passing listen.

Kanmani Anbodu, Paartha Vizhi, Rakkama Kaiya Thattu, Yamunai Aatrile, Sundari Kannal, Kaattukuyilu, Chinna Thayaval - Were you aware that both Gunaa and Thalapathi released on the same day back in 1991? Well, that doesn't matter, because what matters most is Ilaiyaraaja's utterly spell-binding music, is it not?

Aattirambile Kombile, Chempoove Poove, Kottum Kuzhal Vizhi, Marikkoodinullil (Kaalapani) - M. G. Sreekumar and K. S. Chithra enthrall with their voices in these delectable melodies.

Endhan Nenjil (Kalaignan) - Words are not enough to describe the sheer gorgeous semi-classical melody that's Endhan Nenjil, a fine composition set in Nalinakanthi raga. And to top it, what a great singing by K. J. Yesudas and S. Janaki!

Thavikkiren, Kadhal Neethana (Time) - I love synths and no one does synths better than Ilaiyaraaja.

Oru Iniya Manadhu (Johnny) - Sujatha, in one of her earliest singing efforts for Ilaiyaraaja, sounds her incredible sweet self in this pleasant composition.

Oru Maina (Uzhaippali) - Melodious, sensuous and sultry, Oru Maina is a testament to Mano and Chithra's vocal prowess.

Aagaya Vennilavae (Arangetra Velai) - I am here for the violins, singers Yesudas and Uma Ramanan, and of course Ilaiyaraaja's timeless arrangements.

Malai Kovil Vaasalil, Maadethile Kanni (Veera), Kuyil Paattu (En Rasavin Manasile), Andhiyile Vaanam (Chinnavar), Malliga Mottu (Sakthivel), Ennai Thottu (Unna Nenachen Pattu Padichen), Maalayil (Chatriyan), Ennulle Ennulle (Valli), Neethaane Naaldhorum (Paattu Vaathiyar), Paaradi Kuyile (Naangal), Poovoma Oorgolam (Chinna Thambi) - I can't imagine anyone else but Swarnalatha singing these lilting melodies.

Ilavenirkala Panjami (Manam Virumbuthe Unnai), Oliyile Therivadhu (Azhagi), Kaiyetha, Mandaarappoo Mooli (Vinodayathra), Roja Poonthotam (Kannukkul Nilavu), Minnaram Manathe (Guru) - The reason why Ilaiyaraaja is referred to as Isaignani, a musical genius. What spellbinding songs!

Meetatha Oru Veenai (Poonthottam) - One of the most beautiful songs composed in Reethigowla raga, with Hariharan and Mahalakshmi Iyer in splendid form.

Ennai Thalaata (Kadhalukku Mariyadhai), Nilavu Paatu (Kannukkul Nilavu), Aaro Paadunnu (Kadha Thudarunnu), Amruthamayi Abhayamai (Snehaveedu), Kaatril Varum (Oru Naal Oru Kanavu) - I have to confess, I am officially in love with Hariharan's voice!

Ennai Yenna, Kannan Nee En, Enakkinai Yaar (Ivan) - Sudha Ragunathan, need I say more?

Mudhi Mudhi Ittefaq Se, Gumm Summ Gumm (Paa), Cheeni Kum, Baatein Hawa Hain, Jaane Do Na (Cheeni Kum) - Although repurposed from their 80's originals, the fact that the tunes still remain incredibly fresh speaks volumes about Ilaiyaraaja's talent as a genius composer. Gumm Summ Gumm, a contemporary version of Thumbi Vaa (Olangal), has been previously adapted several times by Ilaiyaraaja as Aakasam Eenatidho (Nireekshana), Neer Veezhchi Thee Moottuthe (Kanne Kalaimane) and Sangathil Padatha (Auto Raja).

Kadhal Oviyam (Kadhal Oviyam), Kaalai Paniyil Aadum (Gaayathri) - Sujatha's earliest songs in Tamil right around the time she made her debut in 1977, and what lovely melodies!
