Amidst a western-styled chorus, brass and percussion, the evergreen combo of Rajini-SPB-Vairamuthu and A. R. Rahman strike again in Engae Pogudho Vaanam. As majestic and grand as it sounds especially with SPB's flawless vocals, the tune is at best customary. Its instrumental variant Rana's Dream, built on the Engae Pogudho Vaanam hook, is gorgeously composed and the serene arrangements make it all the more enchanting.

Just listening to Medhuvaagathaan gives you a musical high. With late Vaalee's lyrics, and singers SPB and Sadhana Sargam's first-rate rendition to give company, the mridangam and string backed melody soars beautifully. Rajinikanth's Tamil diction may not be perfect in the elaborately arranged Maattram Ondrudhaan Maaraadhadhu, but Vairamuthu's poetic words works well. Haricharan Seshadri's intermittent singing and a konnakol by V. Umashankar rounds off the track.

Latha Rajinikanth is best known for singing Kadavul Ullame from Anbulla Rajinikanth and she sounds incredibly sweet in the minimally orchestrated Manappenin Sathiyam. Manamaganin Sathiyam, expressing the groom's side of affairs in the institution of marriage, is equally good and Haricharan pulls off a fab job of the singing. The use of nadaswaram in the backgrounds is particularly noteworthy. The title song Engal Kochadaiiyaan accentuates the period feel of the film, its diegetic soundbed elevated by the resounding percussion employed.

The Hindustani semi-classical Idhayam rides on Chinmayi and Srinivas' first-rate vocal performance, with the spell-binding choice of arrangements making it one of the best to come from Rahman in a while. Karma Veeran, sung by A. R. Rahman and A. R. Raihanah, is yet another grand orchestral piece and the anthemic nature of the tune is something that we heard many a times before from the composer. A great blend of meaningful lyrics and music, Rahman has a winner in Kochadaiiyaan that's an enticing mix of traditional and the contemporary.
