Music Review: Shuddh Desi Romance (Hindi)

Composer(s): Sachin-Jigar
Film: Shuddh Desi Romance

Composer duo Sachin-Jigar may have had an eventful year so far with ABCD, Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story, I, Me Aur Main, Go Goa GoneIssaq and Ramaiya Vastavaiya (which I found a little bland!), but with Yash Raj's Shuddh Desi Romance, it appears they are finally hitting the big league. Sunidhi Chauhan and Mohit Chauhan play their parts to perfection in the fun and frolic filled Tere Mere Beech Mein, the conversational style working wonders for the song. The orchestration, encompassing accordion, and trombone among others, is a musical treat! Gulabi (Jigar Saraiya, Priya Saraiya) is a great composition no doubt, the Indian folk-western fusion beautifully adorning the addictive melody, but I wish the auto-tuning was left out.

Divya Kumar croons the catchy folk-qawwali-rock Chanchal Mann Ati Random in his inimitable style, while the harmonium-laden title track benefits from a enthusiastic rendition, courtesy Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade. The five instrumentals, that follow next, are no less fabulous. If Mujhe Kiss Kar Sakte Ho's genre-shifts are handled with finesse, Love in Jaipur's Latin-folk mix yields interesting results. Tez Waala Attraction traces Chanchal Mann aided by a superb use of flute, as is Gulabi in the fantastically reimagined Boyfriend BanogeyBhanwara Ma Bhatke, with Divya Kumar on the mic, has a predominant folk tune with brief bursts of techno sounds. From their early Teree Sang days, Sachin-Jigar have gone from strength to strength with every film. One hell of a consistency I must say! Shuddh Desi Romance is quirky, desi and thoroughly enjoyable.
