Music Review: Irandam Ulagam (Tamil)

Composer(s): Anirudh Ravichander, Harris Jayaraj
Film: Irandam Ulagam

Veteran singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam continues to astound with his masterful rendition of the slow, yet haunting En Kaadhal Theeye. The orchestration goes in perfectly with the free-flowing tune, and the inclusion of accordion and other instruments is particularly noteworthy. Vinnathaandi Anbe Vandhai's (Vijay Prakash) addictive EDM groove lends pathos a whole new spin (much like Uyrin Uyirae from Kaakha Kaakha), and in yet another 'soup song' from Dhanush, Pazhangalla Vishamulla has the actor doing the honors suitably in the soft kuthu that's otherwise fleetingly engaging.

Kanimozhiye has that unmissable ring of familiarity associated with a Harris Jayaraj ballad, but Karthik aces the breezy melody with his fabulous vocals. Hariharan and Sriram's enthusiastic singing powers the interestingly arranged Raakkozhi Raakhozhi, but the tune sadly isn't as half interesting as the sounds Harris incorporates in the track. The composer once again gets everything right in the folky Mannavane En Mannavane, a splendorous melody riding on Shakthisree Gopalan and Gopal Rao's spotless rendition. Irandam Ulagam sees Harris Jayaraj in such a good form after a long gap, this might as well be his irandam innings!

Update: The album features three more songs set to tune by Anirudh, of which Iravinil Oruvanai strikes a chord, in part to the melodic guitar-backed arrangements and Chinmayi's splendid singing.
